Easy re-frame: Why ditching your product frenemies will up your makeup game

Updated: Jan 28, 2018

They say you become the five people you hang around with the most. So, imagine each product in your makeup bag is part of your squad. I bet you have a few trusty stalwarts you can count on when you're having a bad day? Everyone needs one or two of those. But what about Frenemies? Those past-the-sell-by-date oldies that really don't suit you anymore, yet you keep buying, on repeat, out of habit. They're what I call product frenemies, the one's that you keep around out of fear of letting go. And they're the products that are holding you back from your best self.

Kick out the products that no longer serve you; you know the ones I mean; the cakey foundation that hasn't evolved with the times/technology/your personality/style, the overly opalescent lip gloss that drains the colour from your cheeks and those retro eye shadows that are ruining your street cred - and your confidence.

Then, keep the basics: Those loyal sidekicks that consistently have your back for important life events; say, an interview, big meeting, date night, late night. For me, that's products like Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation, Clinique Lash Power Mascara, and Nars Soft Matte Complete Concealer. Then, for a little excitement, seasonally add one or two newbies; those with a fresh point of view that will break you out of your comfort zone and give you a sense of agelessness. In the makeup world that's anything from brands like Glossier, a so-simple it's genius 'millenial' brand designed for real women and real life, and Fenty Beauty, Rihanna's off-the-charts-good makeup line that includes those impossible-to-find shades no one else is doing.

I have started hanging out with, among others in the range, Glossier Cloud Paint in Dusk, a creamy cheek stain that freshens up cheekbones without sliding around. I also adore their Skin Tint, which perks up my complexion in a sporty, weekend-y kind of way. Underneath foundation, I've recently discovered Fenty Beauty's Pro Flit'r Instant Retouch Primer, a non-drying matte lotion that primes skin for easier makeup application. And excitedly, it gives my skin a Spanx-like effect, diffusing pores and imperfections.

What you fall for is all down to you and your lifestyle; The only rule to a smart ageing makeup bag is to shake it up every now and again. Introduce some newness, so that your kit evolves as you do meeting you right where you are at this precise moment, not where you were five years ago. #easyreframes
